Chauncey waved his way past security at the airport followed by his little sister Belle, he still found it a bit curious that she decided to follow along in picking up Maddie. He honestly had been a bit shocked when she had decided that a summer with the Jensens was in order and Selina had agreed to it, not that she gave him or his ex much of a choice anymore. None of that really mattered now though the cause for her to leave was much more chaos than even he anticipated with everything that Natasha had done at DGI, looking back perhaps he should have taken more stock into what his only daughter had told him and claimed. Regardless, his marriage was effectively over as of two weeks ago and if Natasha thought she was just going to walk away with a piece of DGI under her belt she was dead wrong. He may not have approved of his father giving the company to Jackson, but he was damn sure gonna make sure, a Devonshire remained as CEO no matter the cost.

He had been right about the other matter as well Greer had been hiding something from him the pretty nurse at the hospital had ran the test that he asked, He was certain it would be proved that the boy was his despite Greer’s protests that he was not apparently the lab was a  bit behind but they expected the results any day now. He saw the wedding from the other side of the glass and watched as that buffoon Brock stood there and married the woman he wanted, if anything the pep talk had been exactly what he needed. He went down the hallway to the private runway and watched as the DGI jet made a touchdown on the runway perfectly, hearing his phone buzz he took it out. Legal was still keeping them all up to date on Tess’s latest scheme and attempted take over technically she may have held a title and had power to remove people at will, but as a board member she couldn’t cut any of them entirely out. By blood it was their birthright. He saw Belle doing the same and waited a few moments before they were given the signal to walk out to the runway where he watched the stairs lower and they both waited for his daughter to get off the plane.

Madeline sat in the seat she’d always occupied on trips, where she’d sit beside her grandfather, as the plan taxied towards the private terminal. It used to be that she’d talk to him about anything and everything that came to mind but now alone, she was scrolling page six on her iPad, rolling her eyes at the latest installment of Chauncey’s dirty laundry airing out for everyone to see. It was so utterly embarrassing. Even across the country in California, people knew who she was and the mess her father had made but she did feel vindicated. When all was finally said and done she came out smelling like a rose and frankly everyone owed her an apology though she’d likely not get them. Fortunately she had her mothers family to keep her distracted and after all these years she finally felt like she had a sense of who Logan was. Her hand went to her throat where she fingered Logan’s necklace and chewed her lip wondering what advice her mother would give her for all of this. She was grateful to have spent the last two months with the Jensen’s but constantly hearing how much she looked like Logan, by her family and all the people that had known her mother, was disconcerting. People looked at her like they’d seen a ghost. She’d catch her grandparents staring at her and she knew they were looking for Logan but at least they hadn’t forgotten about her like Chauncey had over the years. Maybe he was haunted by the resemblance to her mother like those others but that didn’t excuse him from being a deadbeat.

She felt the plane slow to a crawl and finally stop, causing her to drop her iPad in her bag and head towards the door.  She headed down the stairs, faltering a bit as she saw Chauncey standing there with Belle. She knew not to expect Selina, Mason needed her more right now but this she hadn’t been prepared for. Chauncey should be too wrapped up in his own drama to even remember she was returning today. Belle must’ve cajoled him into coming. Or DGIs PR team forced him but no, neither Simon nor Talia would do that to her. She quickly recovered and glided down the remaining steps without looking at Chauncey. She handed her tote to the driver while the staff brought her luggage off behind her and smiled at her aunt. “Hi Belle,” she said kissing one cheek then the other. She’d honestly tried to ignore Chauncey but she couldn’t help but glance over at him. She looked him over for a second and looked back to Belle. “Why did you bring him? I’ve seen enough of him and Na-trasha all over the internet. Where’s my Grammy? Why didn’t she come to get me? I talked to her last night and she didn’t say anything about this arrangement.” She stared Chauncey down for another long moment and really had no words for him at all, then turned to the driver. “Take me home now so I can see my horses.”

“Jackie is dealing with DGI stuff with my mom and told us though she desperately wants to see you. She’ll be at your return dinner tonight.” Belle said, removing her sunglasses as she kissed Maddie’s cheeks right back. Looking at her niece in the eyes to tell her to play nice. Ever since she became a Devonshire, it seemed Maddie had welcomed her. Maybe it was because she was only a few years older. Or maybe they could share clothes but somehow they’d forged a strong bond. While Maddie was gone they talked quite a bit. It was one of the main reasons Chauncey asked her to attend in picking up Maddie from the airport. Running her hand through her hair, thinking this entire situation would be trickier than she thought. Maddie was like every fucking Devonshire wrapped in one. She was stubborn and wouldn’t budge until Chauncey apologized for his behavior against her. Maddie wanted the vindication and that meant her dad kissing the ring. Now would the big and bad Chauncey Devonshire apologize was the question.

“I have something to discuss with you niecey? So I’m a brand ambassador for this new fashion line. Well I’d love for you to do some modeling with me. Nothing like a photoshoot, just dance to Ivan’s song on your uncle’s social media platform in the fashions and boom. I’ll even give you a percentage of the proceeds if the video does well.” Trying to shift the energy. Opening her purse Belle applied lipgloss.  She looked at the driver nodding her head to raise the partition. “So tell me how California was?” Looking at Chauncey she shot him a look to say something to her. “Oh your dad is doing some brilliant work against my own personal mommy dearest.” Knowing Maddie knew everything going on and she would have opinions and maybe clearing the air was the best move right now and going forward.

Brock had sat through Father Kreja and the pastor from the Baptist church he thought was Elijah Jenkins but he didn’t know him that well.  Both eulogizing his brother and offering comforting words to his family. So far it was a service that respected who his brother was, a son, brother, cousin, surrogate uncle to many the rest to him was white noise. His brother was a good person, probably one of the absolute best that he ever knew, his parents had tried their best to instill that in all of them but Zach lived it. Zach put his life on the line everyday for the greater good, to defend people that couldn’t defend themselves when needed to answer the call. His brother had been ridiculed for it in high school for coming out as not sure which way he loved more men or women. It had been hard and something the family had come to terms with, but he always had his support that was unwavering. The irony of the service taking place at St. Paul was not lost on him seeing how Zach hadn’t set foot in church since Dylan’s baptism.

It seemed church had always been more his Aunt Lauren’s thing and while the Fraiser’s had always been Catholic few of them actually abided by the church or its standards. His grandmother of course being one, he was pretty sure his uncle showed up for points or political clout; it wasn’t like he was above reproach. His aunt though she believed, like really believed in the church and he remembered her coming to pray relentlessly for Vicky after she died. His parents did their best to raise them in the church given his father’s ties to the faith. Though ending up with a bisexual son and lesbian daughter, both his parents left the church about the same time Zach came out and then Kelsey did too. He took a moment to take it all in, looking at all the faces around the church while Father Kreja began to say a prayer, out of habit he bowed his head. Repeating the words as instructed and then realized it was his turn to get up and speak, he gripped Greer’s hand beside him while he walked up the pulpit. Once there he gripped the sides not sure exactly what he was going to say, though he had rehearsed it.

“I think I wrote something down but I’m not sure I can find it. Normally we just like to fly by the seat of our pants.” Brock said, digging around his pockets trying to find the paper, seeing his siblings and cousins, slightly grinning at the reference. Zach was like that flying by the seat of his pants, most Fraiser’s were and as much as his grandfather had a drunk he was one of the best at figuring it out as he went along, flying by the seat of his pants. Eventually he gave up and then looked back at everyone who was there to say goodbye to his brother.

“Zach was my brother, a pain in my ass at times seeing he was a few years younger than me and always trying to tag along with me, Braden, Jon and Devin. Though he eventually fit in with our cousin Dani and her crew, with them often being thick as thieves. But he was my brother, he was the kid that I got to give all my older brother advice too, some he took but often at times he ignored it, wanting to pave his own way. He was always there when our parents needed him to help with an errand or anything they needed and they adored and loved him unconditionally. He was protective especially with those he cared about. Our sisters could tell you that. Mess with them he was sure to show you the door as he kicked your ass on the way out. He loved deeply.” Brock said reaching down and grabbing a tissue from the box on the stage, it was true his brother loved and he loved deeply. Mason of course was the love of his life everyone knew that but he had also loved Dante and in his own messed up way Scarlett Nicholas and he also loved the son he never got to meet.

Fourteen days, eleven hours, twenty three minutes that was how long it had been since he had seen Zach, currently he was lying in the guest bedroom of the now empty condo that he and Zach had shared. Another sleepless night, he didn’t know which way was up or down and he wondered if he would ever care to ever again. The condolences had been overwhelming at the hospital, to the point where Selina had taken him back to her place for the night in the days and two weeks since it was a constant whirlwind of visitors stopping by. Either Selina or Jamal were constantly checking on him and he had kept his mother at bay, there was an ache where Zach was. Zach’s family had stopped by and he had been very cordial with Helen and Brandon, they had never been close but they were Zach’s parents and he appreciated they wanted to help him and help with the funeral to plan it together. His pastor had stopped by offering counseling as did the priest from St. Paul’s although he was not ready to speak to either one. He laid there for a few moments remembering how Jon and Devin had come by at the request of Zach’s parents for his dress blues and how he had watched as they both almost cried gently folding it to take to the funeral home.

He sat up in bed looking at the time rubbing his face over his hands as he opened the door to the condo, it was so empty and quiet the mail had piled up over the last two weeks. The dishes too, and he looked at them normally he and Zach would switch off and he opened the door to their bedroom and memories overwhelmed him the last time they laid there making love or just talking. He took a step inside running a hand through his hair realizing he probably needed to wash it and saw the bathroom door open. Zach’s toothbrush on the charger and decided he wasn’t ready as he felt the tears coming down and he heard the knock on the front door He closed the bedroom door he knew he looked like a mess but he also knew what today was and he honestly didn’t want to face it, walking to the front door he looked to make sure it was his sister before he opened it. “I don’t want to do this.” Mason said his voice low, opening the door for her to come in, seeing she had brought a suit he asked her to pick up. He couldn’t even go into his own bedroom to get to his closet without collapsing into a pile of tears. “I don’t know if I can do this, you know? This wasn’t how everything was supposed to go down or happen for us.”

Selina felt the honest disconnect of the day. A few months ago they were celebrating them getting married and now they were burying Zach. Life was cruel and unfair but seeing her brother just looking so defeated and his spirit was honestly crushed. She didn’t want him to have to do this. He shouldn’t be alone after all they had gone through. After all the trials and tribulations, who could they blame for this loss? She placed the suit down and slowly walked to her brother and hugged him tightly. Embracing him so he could feel the love. After all they had been through she wasn’t sure Mason could take anything else. Gloria had been trying hard to be a part of this and although she appreciated her tenacity right now her input wasn’t needed. Selina thanked God Jamal’s barber came over and cut his hair yesterday. He looked so handsome like her father but the hurt in his eyes she wasn’t sure would ever leave. She wasn’t sure her brother would ever be the same. As she walked him to the couch she flopped down and looked in his eyes. “You know I expected a slew of nieces and nephews and a long life of me and Zach gossiping about Atlas Falls. I don’t think anyone thought this is how you and Zach’s life was supposed to go. You two were supposed to be the fussing gay couple who have fabulous parties now we just have.” Selina paused knowing she couldn’t get emotional. Gripping her broach it was once her father’s watch that she turned into this pendant. It gave her strength. “Now we just have the memories.”

Touching his face she looked into her brother’s eyes. “You are hurting so badly right now. He’s gone but you have so much love inside of you for that man. I don’t know where you put it. I don’t know where you store that. But I do know Mason, that you are wrapped in love. In so much love and I don’t want you to ever and I mean ever to think you aren’t protected through this. If you need air, or can’t be in that room. I’m here. Just like dad would be or.” She paused looking at him. “She’s been calling me all morning. She’s demanding to see you before the services begin. Look I know it’s a lot having Gloria back but our mother is determined to help today. She’s going to be there today and I think you should deal with her first maybe? Can we set some boundaries together? Jamal and Ophelia will be here shortly. Let me um straighten up in here.” Selina began to immediately clean up her brother’s space. “Mason you gotta go get ready baby.”

Bliss stood in the doorway to Max’s room, one hand protectively moving to the small swell of her pregnant belly and the other reaching for the wall to support herself as she watched Seb dealing with the crushing realization that they’d lost their child before ever knowing him. Max was still sedated, a blessing really but she would eventually have to deal with the pain. Seb was at her side, devastated and lost. And for a few moments it felt like time had paused and she couldn’t move forward or backward, just watch the nightmare unfold. She felt Hunter come up behind her and then she felt his arms surround her. She glanced up at him but couldn’t find her words and for a few moments they watched the scene before them and when it became too much Bliss turned in his arms and held onto him. Her sisters baby was gone and Max was shattered. Her sister in law was fighting for her life down the hall. Zach had died in the line of duty. The rest of them were surely lucky to have made it off the boat with their lives. She wanted so badly to be home with her little boy but she knew Fox was safe. Keke had taken him to Jackson’s house with Dylan and the twins and they were all fast asleep. If she showed up now he’d pick up on the sadness and she had no intention of bringing him here to the hospital. It was best to let him sleep in peace and give her and Hunter time to process things.

She finally pulled back, holding onto Hunter’s hand for a moment before joining Seb in the room. “Seb,” she said quietly, hoping not to startle him as she placed a hand on his shoulder before leaning down to hug him. “I am so sorry,” she managed, fighting back her tears as she looked at his tear soaked face. “Enrique was already so loved by everyone. This is devastating.” She looked over at Max, who was unconscious and eerily still. Her sister only barely seemed to be warming up to the idea of being a mother and now it had been ripped away from her. She feared her sister would be haunted by that. She had never understood Max’s reaction to most of her pregnancy but they all suspected she’d come around. Sebastian though, was a proud papa from the moment the news broke. Whenever he mentioned the baby, his eyes lit up. That baby was his entire world from the moment it was conceived. She placed a hand on her stomach, so grateful that her baby was ok and she felt a little guilty for it. “Please tell me what I can for you. For Max. I don’t know how to help either of you. Is your mother here? Do you need me to find her? Call anyone else? Get you anything while you sit with Max. Please. Anything you need, just tell me.”

Sebastian stared blankly outside of the window sitting next to Max’s bedside. He felt numb in so many ways. This pushed him past his capacity and he wasn’t sure he’d ever get over losing their son. Looking at Bliss who was about to give birth herself made him feel a slight tinge of jealousy. He’d literally changed his life for himself and Max. No more mob activities and being on the straight and narrow. He knew his mother would never give up the illicit lifestyle that she was accustomed to. However he didn’t want that violence to infest his life and all he wanted now was revenge. “Can you bring my son back? Can you explain to me why God has forsaken Max and me? Can you tell me if my son is in heaven? I have a confession, Bliss.” He said, turning around finally looking at her face to face. “My family aren’t good people. In fact today I’m not sure I’m a good person. All I can think about is killing Hector and Ronan. They snatched my son away from me with violence. A bomb on that boat? Who does that? Do they not understand the rules of the game? Maybe someone should teach them.” His eyes grew dark.

“Unfortunately Bliss there is nothing you can do for me. You can’t make this all go away. My son is dead and Max is so hurt. She put on this front as if this baby wasn’t important to her. However I know this will leave her broken. My mother is making arrangements at the moment to get our priest from Spain to come here for our son’s service. So I’m here alone with my fiancé and I thank you for trying but nothing will comfort me. Nothing will fill this hole in my heart and nothing will make this better. No offense, none of your sweet words and epithets will fix this. Bliss, my son is dead. Hunter and you should be thankful you made it out without being injured. Go check on Jackson. I have Max.” Turning around so she couldn’t see him crying or the emotion boiling inside of him. “But I promise all the Devonshire family one thing: revenge and retribution will happen. An eye for an eye. They spilled the first blood but I will be the one who laughs last.” Sebastian was done with being soft and a lover. He wanted blood to fill the streets. “Atlas Falls and those people have no idea whom they’ve awoken.”

Hector eyed a shivering Max and for a brief second he felt horrible for the woman. Gia literally was about to snatch her child. “Does this look familiar? You saved your beloved Sebastian here Max and now you lose everything here.” He said as he looked into her eyes with a cold steel stare. Grabbing her arm he smirked as he pulled out two syringes. The first would induce labor and the second would kill Max. Stroking her face he looked at her and smiled slightly. “You are about to save my life and Gia’s. Things are going to change soon and you will be the catalyst. Isn’t that beautiful? Isn’t that the thing you want Max. To make a big scene? You will be legendary. Now strut now bitch.” He yelled, yanking her arm still as he looked into eyes. “I have felt how you must be feeling right now. Confused, scared and in fact hopeless. Your future his dimmed but everyone will remember you. Permanently frozen in time as the ice bitch who died with everyone else I killed. You see your boat was a beautiful vessel. I worked as a mercenary in the jungles before I became Gia’s friend. I killed people in wars and things you wouldn’t believe but tonight was my biggest art show. Killing so many people at once.” He said flippantly. “Boom! But this is also art Max. Giving life to someone who is so special you see your son is a legacy now. A secret between us all that will bond us forever.” Hector looked at her intently as he kissed her forehead. “Now I have to induce your labor and you will then get this shot that’ll stop your heart. It’s the only human thing to do, after all you deserve to die painlessly.”

Taking her arm he looked Max in the eyes again wildly. “Tell me how it feels? To know you’re about to die a legend.” Injecting Max with a compound to induce her labor he watched her shaking and crying. “Stop fucking crying bitch or I’ll cut that fucking baby out of you. I don’t want to hear nothing but you screaming and pushing, got that Maxi girl? You aren’t to cry or whimper because I have no problem slitting your throat to get that child out and none of the Devonshire’s will find your body when I’m done carving you up.” Hector said as he stood up seeing Gia walking up cradling that dead baby inside of her. “Are you alright and ready for this? You’re truly about to be a mother to a child.” He looked over at Max shaking and trying to stifle her cries. “She’ll be giving birth very soon. I am proud of you securing your place right now Gia. Take what you want but I have to ask Gia. One question though: when are we going to kill Ronan? You see, the purpose of this kid was to join your families. Now when we get the kid you don’t need Ronan right? So when are we going to kill him?”

Gia stumbled into the warehouse, bracing herself against the wall with one hand as she made her way towards Hector. Here she was heavily laboring, almost didn’t make it inside and he was playing with Max? “Does it look like I give two shits about Ronan right this very second?” She seethed. Grabbing the edge of a table, she tried to breathe like she’d learned in that one damn Lamaze class she managed to attend. “Ronan’s going to get what’s coming to him. You should be more concerned about what Ronan’s going to do to us if he walks on here and finds you sticking his precious little meal ticket with needles. Didn’t your mother teach you not to play with your food? The river must be swarming with search parties looking for her by now. Focus. We need that baby. I want my baby now Hector!” Gia lunged at him and beat her fists on his chest. “I am not going to lose another son and the longer you stand here yapping, the closer that wolf gets to our backs. I have to have this baby now!” She screamed as another contraction ripped through her and she doubled over, still holding onto the front of Hector’s shirt as she did her best to ride it out. There was no turning back now. She couldn’t hold on to her son any longer. It was time to say goodbye to those fantasies of what might have been and grab the crown that was dangling in front of her.

With her son in her arms, Ronan would have no choice but to get in line. To give her the respect she deserved. It would secure her place at the top of his organization. She’d no longer be a joke to them. Not just the mob princess Ronan slummed with. If he wouldn’t love her, fine. She had his son and his legacy was something he would never deny. What did it matter if they removed him in a day or a week or a month? She would enjoy Ronan slowly realizing he would never get to love anyone else out in the open because you didn’t disrespect your child’s mother in their world. She wanted to savor that before they wiped him out of the picture. She snatched the remaining syringe out of Hector’s hand. She was posed to inject it when another contraction came. This one felt like it would split her in half and she dropped the syringe, grabbing a chair as her knees grew weak. She fell to all fours and helplessly watched the syringe roll across the floor and disappear under a palette. “Look what you made me do! If you had paid attention to me instead of Max that wouldn’t have happened! You’re an idiot!” She screamed, slapping her hand on the cold concrete floor, tears blurring her vision. She didn’t think she could stand back up though and crawled toward the dirty old tarp Hector had thrown down. At least he managed to pull himself away from Max long enough to remember to do that. It couldn’t look planned but she wasn’t having a baby on the floor of this damn warehouse. Max was a different story. Let her see how the other 99% suffered, wallowing in the mud so her and her family could live the high life.  “I think something’s happening. I think this is it, Hector. Make sure Max is ready. Make sure my baby’s coming. I just need him here and everything will be ok. Hector, come over here! I need you.”
